MAJOR Allergy Waffle Update

One of the most iconic Disney World foods is the Mickey Waffle. On my most recent trip, I enjoyed some delicious waffles at ‘Ohana and Hollywood and Vine made with the Bloomfield Farms allergy waffle mix. I was quite excited to come across Bloomfield Farms on-site as it’s a company that I purchase several allergy-friendly products from at home, and was the first safe-for-me bread that I could find when my allergies were first diagnosed.

A couple nights ago, there were some rumblings starting in a food allergy Disney group I belong to that the Bloomfield Farms waffles were being pulled from Chef Mickey’s and the Contempo Cafe at Disney’s Contemporary Resort. The poster said that they were informed that Golden Malted, the company who provides and services the Mickey Waffle irons had threatened to pull all of the waffle irons because Disney was using other company’s allergy waffle mixes (like the Bloomfield Farms one I loved) in them. A commenter explained that Golden Malted had an “allergy” waffle mix that contained soy and was made in a shared facility with tree nuts, and so several guests had concerns about the impact this would have on guests with soy and tree nut allergies.

This morning, Pixie Lizzie, a travel agent who specializes in serving guests with food allergies (http://www.pixielizzie.com) posted an update on facebook. It was confirmed that the Golden Malted is the only waffle mix currently being used on Walt Disney World property, so she spoke to Golden Malted directly to get information about the allergy waffle mix they have available, ingredients, and production protocols.

So it looks like Golden Malted has formulated a new allergy waffle mix, without the soy it previously had. The new mix is made in a dedicated Gluten-Free facility. There may still be tree nuts and other allergens in the shared facility, though Golden Malted laid out the standards for cleaning any shared equipment in their email with Pixie Lizzie. For guests with allergies outside of the top 9, corn and rice are both included in this mix, and those with corn or rice allergies should avoid these waffles.
