Previous Update Notes

UPDATE 8/14, 2:23 am Eastern Time: All sections of this page have been updated as of 1:00 AM. The park-specific pages are in progress, but I’m trying to “upgrade” them with the table of contents, so it’s not a simple copy-and-paste situation. Wednesdays are my busiest days for my day to day life stuff, so while I will be working on it some, I won’t be able to put as much time in tomorrow to finish moving everything and reworking navigation links. My current goal is to have it finished by Friday morning. I am, however, dropping in a Table of Contents into THIS post to make it a little easier to navigate in the meantime.

UPDATE 8/13/24, 3:04 am Eastern time: Due to my computer crash last week, I was unable to do the things I was trying in the previous update. I am still working on this week’s update. The update will include the park-specific pages and table of contents as promised, but will not be done before this afternoon at the earliest. I need sleep, and the “workaround” access I have to work on the blog is harder to use because it was in the middle of repairs and an upgrade as well when my wife pulled it back into use while my personal device is being fixed.

UPDATE 8/4/24: By the end of this week, this page will be a navigation page to park-specific pages. It will also host updates, such as this one, and the general “timestamp” above this update. Re-formatting with tables is coming by the end of August in the hopes that it will make it easier to read and find what you are looking for. If you’re interested in reading the first of a mini-series of posts about trends in the survey responses, you can click here to learn about demographics, ride counts, park popularity and more. More will be coming later this week and next focusing on specific rides and advice from other disabled Disney-goers who have done the parks without DAS.

UPDATE 8/1/24: The database is current as of 12:33 AM this morning. I decided to do a special mid-week update tonight as it’s the end of the first full month of the RTQ Database. Later this week, I’m going to be sharing a little info about trends I’ve noticed in the data that’s been coming into the surveys, with some percentages and some thoughts. I’m still working on figuring out the lead time, a plan to split the work over multiple days each week.

UPDATE 7/28/24: Hey y’all! Update is running late tonight. You all blew me away with responses this week and it’s taking me much longer than usual to process and run the update. There were three times the usual number. I’m working as fast as I can, please bare with me as I get it done.

UPDATE 7/14/24: We are getting to the point where I’m going to probably break this up into multiple pages soon. In the coming weeks, I’ll be brainstorming a more organized system for this database to make it easier to find what you need. As usual, updates will be dropping on Sunday nights for the foreseeable future based on the survey responses for the parks.

UPDATE 7/1/24: The new, streamlined versions of the RTQ Database survey forms are LIVE. Click here to access the form for Walt Disney World Resort in Florida. Click here to access the form for Disneyland Resort in California.

Original Post and “Rules” for the Database

Good afternoon, everyone! Today I’m kicking off the VERY early version of the RTQ Database I’ve been working on the last week. The idea behind this database is to have a dated accounting of guest experiences in the parks without DAS accommodations, laid out in a similar way to the Fat Friendly Parks Series, but crowdsourced and covering multiple people with varying disabilities. We’re hoping to track changes to the suggestions made by the attractions CMs over time, looking for some kind of consistency to emerge so that disabled guests can have some kind of idea of how things may go at various attractions.

A couple bits of housekeeping info before we start:

  1. The database is NOT comprehensive, though we are working to get as many experiences as possible archived here. It will take time to get information for all the attractions in all the parks. The people gathering this info are also disabled, have difficulties in the parks and in the lines, as well as finding the spoons to type up and submit those experiences. Disabled guests often can’t access the parks for more than a few hours, and we’re all working WITHOUT the DAS accommodation that made these parks accessible for us. Therefore, guests may only be riding one ride and then leaving without making it on anything else. It’s going to take time.
  2. If you’d like to contribute to this database, you can email me at accessthemouseinfo@gmail.com or drop a comment below. I’m working on updating the Google Forms to be more user friendly, but those will be linked within the next week.
  3. Just because someone had a specific experience on a ride you plan to check out DOES NOT mean that you will have that same experience. The only way to know what you’ll be told is to try. This is an info-gathering, dated, project that is meant to give guests an IDEA of how things are playing out. However, guests have different abilities and different access needs and the cast members at the attractions have autonomy when it comes to making these decisions, and can grant “one-time exceptions” depending on the circumstances in the parks, the rides, and the party asking for an accommodation. Nothing is guaranteed to be standard procedure on this page.
  4. “RTQ” or “Return to Queue” is NOT an official system: it’s a made up “title” for the attractions-based “alternate accommodations” from the very early days of “New DAS”. Disney doesn’t use this term or acronym, but it is being shared with this acronym since It’s been widely used since the announcement of the change in April. The official terms for these attractions-based “alternate accommodations” are the “AQR” or Attraction Queue Re-entry (get in the line, exit for a disability related issue, and come back to rejoin your party) and the “LRT” or “Location Return Time” (only available at Disneyland park, this is based on older queues that are not ADA-accessible). This database is NOT set up to specify what rides are “supposed to be” AQR or LRT, only to catalogue the info given at each ride when an accommodation is requested.
  5. This database is going to START on JUST this page, but as more information comes in, it will gain a page for each park, just as my Fat-Friendly Parks Series is set up. (Also, for those interested, I’m looking for more contributors of various body shapes/sizes to add to that series, as well.)
  6. The views and experiences expressed on this page are NOT my own, and are accumulated via anonymous survey. I have NOT been in the parks in the time since the “New DAS” started, and I will not be traveling in the near future. This is NOT because of the DAS changes, but because of my own health issues impacting my ability to travel right now.

We’ve always gotten DAS before for my children’s [redacted personal medical information]. We didn’t apply this time because of what I had been hearing, and because my daughter is doing much better at accommodating herself using coping strategies. I also planned to buy Genie+ and ILLs to keep her out of lines beyond her capacity. My daughter was very excited for Tiana’s Bayou Adventure! She was in an Tiana dress. Our virtual queue was called around 2-3pm, and when we arrived to scan in, the line looked extremely long. I asked the cast member how long she would estimate the line to be. She said she didn’t know because it was the first day, so they didn’t have a good sense yet. My daughter started to panic, crying and saying “I can’t do it, I can’t do it.” I said to her, “let’s give it a try and if we need to leave, we’ll leave.” At this point, the cast member asked if we had DAS. I replied, “this is our first trip without it.” The cast member gave me a very compassionate look, made eye contact with her co-worker attending the lightning lane who had overheard the conversation, and both of them gestured and said “go this way.” They sent us through the lightning lane. I can’t begin to describe how grateful I was for their perception and kindness.”

This accommodation was not added to my magic band but when I went back at the specified time, the original CM had communicated to the other CMs who were working the Lightning Lane that I would be coming back and to let me through the LL. They did so graciously. . This seemed like a one off special accommodation and not an official sanctioned policy. It worked though!”

I specifically asked the CM at each ride if it was okay that if once my party reached the Lightning Lane merge, they would call me to return to the queue. Each CM was surprisingly understanding and allowed me to do so. I asked if I need a paper pass or anything but the CM said that as long as I came back at a reasonable time, they would let me through the LL line since they remembered what I looked like.”

So I asked the CM “I am autistic and I cannot go in there all narrow and dark. Can I meet my friend at the LL merge or something?” And he let us both go through the LL.”

TRON Lightcycle/Run: 7/9/2024, party of 2 (1 disabled minor with a medical device and a parent): “The virtual queue was called at 8:45 and we got in line. At 9:09pm, minor child needed to leave line to use [medical device that cannot get wet]. The line was outside and it was raining. CM called another CM who called a coordinator named [redacted]. He said that the only accommodation offered on Tron is to come back when the line is shorter. I pointed out that the line doesn’t get shorter because it is a popular ride and he suggested minor child use the device alone and return to the line with me. I explained that [child] is far too young (and Disney even says they have to be supervised until 14) and [child] needs me to control the stimulator. He said we should skip the fireworks because the line will be shorter during the fireworks. I said that the DAS team told us we could use a return to queue and we had used them on other rides and he said that they shouldn’t have told me that and that Tron was different and did not offer accommodations. I have a screenshot of the DAS team telling me to use return to queue on ALL rides. Ultimately, we walked away from the ride and had to return later, missing the fireworks.”

My brother and dad were told to wait in the line as I was to just wait until I got a phone call from them to join them at the mix point as I walked through lighting lane. It helped not being in the line but it wasn’t enjoyable and it felt lonely and isolating.”

She repeated the meet at the merge option. I told her why that didn’t feel like a reasonable option for us, she suggested Genie+, and I flat out told her that it is a violation of the ADA to require a disabled person to pay for an accommodation… to which I got eyebrows, but no further words. For that ride we were actually riding with a family with a person who did qualify for DAS, and when I asked if we could join them as my accommodation we were told that was not a possibility. We were offered for my husband to stand in the stand by line and text me when he got to the first room and wait for me to join him before entering, while the other [party] could use their DAS and wait in the loading room if they wanted to ride with us, but they could not add 2 more people to their DAS even though that was my accommodation. Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run: 7/8/2024, party of 2 (1 disabled minor with a medical device and a parent): “Went in and Minor child immediately had a [medical issue] in the inside area. Left the line and cm said to see another cm under the umbrella to see if a return time was possible. Cm under the umbrella asked if we had others in line. I said it was just the 2 of us. He said he needed a supervisor to approve a return time. Couple minutes later she came and said as long as we were in line it was fine, but the supervisor approves it to make sure there isn’t contradictory information. She asked if we would be back soon and I said it took 45 minutes for the [child’s medical device] to run. They gave us a return time.”

People were grumbling and seemed to think we were cutting to sneak into the LL. Asked CM for return time. She asked if there were others in our party. I said no, just the 2 of us. She asked how long we had been waiting. I said I didn’t know. She asked me to estimate. I said 10-15 minutes. She gave a return time.” The party was able to ride, and decided to try to ride again later that day. The second time, “said my daughter can’t stand in lines and asked for a return time. Was told to talk to the CM under the umbrella (not the case earlier in the day). Daughter was panicking about answering questions from another stranger so we just left the park and went back to the resort. It cut 4 hours out of our day.”

Slinky Dog Dash – 7/13/24, party of 9 (7 adults, 2 minors) (NOTE: one minor in this party DID have DAS, but the respondent was not included on the DAS. This was two families, and the family with the DAS recipient was not allowed to add their 5th family member to the DAS despite it being an immediate family member): “Asked for Slinky Dog as the wait was 75 minutes… I was told that since slinky dog is visible my only option was to have my family wait in line and me join them later, which was really not an option. We chose to try it another time since genie+ times were all gone.”

Slinky Dog Dash: 7/19/2024, party of 5 (2 disabled): “Slinky dog dash offered RTQ to meet my party, and blatantly said as long as the children are 7 or over one or more can wait in line for you- to which we declined that accommodation and waited almost 15 min on a manager to say the same thing- we came back later when the line was at 60 mins and did standby.”

Did not go on”

Toy Story Mania! – 6/21/24, party of 2, “Accommodation offered for toy story mania is wheel chair. And again… they asked me “what is your concern about waiting in line.” I didn’t think they can ask for your issues. I feel like they are trying to “catch” me lying or something. The guy was a bit dismissive. I unfortunately was just kind of seeing red and didn’t catch his name…He told me the line is mostly inside. Thankfully the guy at the standby line got it. He told me about the emergency exits at least and seemed more understanding.”

Toy Story Mania! – 7/20/24, party of 4 (2 adults, 2 minors): “told me my caretaker & I could stay outside and all children over 7 could wait in line… When I was like you must be joking, I just kind of left [because] repeatedly asking was emotionally draining.”

Toy Story Mania! – 8/7/24, party of 4, 1 disabled, no mobility devices – “For any attractions that had over a 30 minute wait, I asked the CM if it would be okay if I stepped out of line if I had a medical emergency, then rejoined my party once I felt better.

Rock ‘N’ Roller Coaster: 7/18/2024, party of 4 (1 disabled, 2 minors): “Line for Aerosmith was over 2 hours long, single rider was closed. No accommodation offered”

Rock ‘N’ Roller Coaster: 7/18/2024, party of 2 (1 disabled, 1 caregiver): “For Rock ‘n Roller Coaster we approached the CM and asked for a return time due to being denied DAS. The CM said they would not do that, so we left and scheduled a Lightning Lane for that evening.”

Fantasmic – 6/21/24, party of 2, “We got to Fantasmic very early at WDW. They were seating at the far end of the theater. I kindly asked a cast member to let me sit closer to the side of the theater nearer to the bathroom. We always ask to sit up near the handicapped bc I can’t go down and up. They usually give us the row right in front of handicap on an end. Today they let us sit in that row just before the switch from dining package. We didn’t ask for the upgrade, but appreciated the kindness and understanding of both a cast member and a coordinator!”

Fantasmic – 6/27/24, party of 2: “We had a dining package for Fantasmic and they tried to make us fill in the middle of the row for that section but I said I couldn’t due to being autistic. The first CM just let me stay at the end of the row in the non-accessible seating but then another one came along and made us move to the accessible seating. It was one row up so I just did it without complaining even though I didn’t really need accessible seating (and also the section was pretty empty so I didn’t feel like I was taking space from someone who needed it).”

Fantasmic – 7/19/24, party of 5 (2 disabled): “The road back to Fantasmic was horrendously long and then we were seated on the far end down near the bottom having to descend then ascend the steps with hundreds of people who were trying to run/push past me.” Survey respondent indicated that the other party member with disabilities had an anxiety or panic attack trying to exit after the show due to crowd size.

Avatar: Flight of Passage: 7/2/2024, party of 2 adults, 1 disabled: “At FOP, I asked a CM about accommodations. she asked what I meant by “accommodations”. I said I was denied DAS and was told to ask about accommodations at each attraction. I explained how RTQ isn’t a good option for my party (myself and my mom) as I have emergency medication that needs to be administered should I pass out (from a rare, life threatening condition I have). I asked about a return time instead, and she told me that FOP is an attraction that does not do return times. She explained I could do RTQ and/or bring my backpack into the line (which I always have on me, as it has all my stuff and the emergency meds). I knew I couldn’t wait in that queue, so we just left. I was not able to ride, and I was very disappointed.”

Avatar: Flight of Passage: 7/10/2024, party of 4 (2 adults, 2 minors, 1 disabled): “I was denied help by a cast member and actually told I could try and purchase an LL as an accommodation!!”

Avatar: Flight of Passage: 7/19/2024, party of 2 (1 disabled, 1 caregiver): “We really wanted to ride Pandora Flight of Passage, but the walk there in the heat to even request an accommodation was so daunting and my nerves were so shot after being denied so many times that I just didn’t even attempt it. Disneyland Resort

Disneyland

Together Forever – A Pixar Nighttime Spectacular: 8/1/24, party of 3 adults, 1 disabled: “At the fireworks show, a teenager used the wheelchair as a back rest, constantly pushing me into my group, even after repeated requests to stop, and her parents doing nothing. At one point she elbowed my injury to the point I yelped… Fireworks and Fantasmic were incredibly stressful with the wheelchair, due to the crowding of people.”

Jungle Cruise: 6/19/2024, party of 1 disabled adult: Survey respondent indicated that they were told no accommodations available at this attraction.

Jungle Cruise – 7/7/2024, party of 1: “Yes. I tried to do what the CSM told me and wait in the line until I felt I could not wait longer. While waiting in the Jungle Cruise line, I was triggered when the line flow changed (i.e., I scoped it out prior to getting in line so I understood the path and could prepare myself), while I was waiting they opened up the upstairs section and this change triggered me. I began to disassociate and panic. I tried to get my phone out to take the picture (as I was by myself I was told that for RTQ I would just need to snap a quick photo, get out of line and when return when I could to re-enter). I could not go up the stairs. I motioned for the people behind me to go around and backed myself up into a corner area to be out of the way. One case member asked me if I was okay, and I stated I had to leave. I tried unclipping the line barrier in front of the exit but was too shaken and the CM had to do it for me. I then walked away and tried to find an area to calm down/center myself. Even though I know the park well I was disoriented…I had previously left the attraction due to a medical issue. When I returned, [redacted] was the CM at the start of the queue. I told him I had a medical episode that required me to leave the line and the DAS CM told me I could utilize RTQ. I showed him my photo, apologizing that it was blurry (during my medical event it was hard to remember to take photo and to juggle my phone in the middle of what I was going through). He asked what happened. I explained that during my wait the change in queue format triggered a medical episode and I had to leave. He asked me if I was okay waiting in a hallway/enclosed space. I told him as long as i could see the start/end (which is why I picked this line), he asked me if I would be able to get in and out of ride okay and I told him yes, my issue was not a mobility one. There is no LL and he allowed me to re-enter the line where I left it as there was an easy entrance/exit path. He then took me to where I could re-enter. The other CMs gave me looks as I entered. One asked if I was okay, I told her yes, and she said she was asking because I looked “off”. A few guests in line grumbled why I was being let in before them and didn’t have to wait. I was able to access the ride, but my day was done; I was just too embarrassed/upset by the situation to try another ride.” This guest shares that they were very disoriented, and that they probably should have went to First Aid but were unable to navigate the parks, even though they know them well. This was the first ride of the day, and because of this situation, they had to leave the park afterwards and were unable to do anything else.

Now the CM had changed and he said I needed to come back in 30 minutes. I said I already have a return time and waited 30 minutes. He said the boarding area was too full and they couldnt let anyone in so I had to wait 30 minutes again. The standby line was 30 minutes so now they were asking me to wait 2x as long because of my disability. When I said this he told me I could park my scooter and go through the regular which 1) I couldn’t and 2) I had already waited the 30 minutes that didn’t actually help. This area of the park was really packed because of HM holiday and because the Tiana area is closed off so there weren’t many options for somewhere to wait out of the sun and I just gave up entirely.”

There they made me wait about 10 minutes to stop the ride to let me board but at this point I was struggling feeling faint from outside in the sun and felt happy to be in the AC.”
