It’s been a pretty eventful couple weeks here.
Last time I did a home blog post, I was talking about the eye injury one of my kids was dealing with. I’m happy to update he has recovered. He saw the opthalmologist about a week and a half ago and the cornea was healed. He had some remaining light sensitivity, but that’s cleared up at this point as well. Now all we’re waiting on is to go back in next week for a dilated exam and to get his new glasses prescription.
Aside from that, I had a couple doctors appointments of my own. I had one appointment with cardiology regarding my dysautonomia symptoms. He confirmed that my heart is great, and put in a referral to the POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome) clinic at the hospital. We went over some other things that may help in the meantime, because the wait list to get into the POTS program is a year long. I also had a primary care appointment, and got the referral to rheumatology (which my endocrinologist recommended). Not much else is new there, just taking things one day at a time. I’ve waited for answers for some of my symptoms for years, so another few months isn’t a huge deal to me, unless things get worse. One thing that was recommended (and the POTS clinic does) is aquatic physical therapy. The compression from the water is stronger than compression garments and supposed to be really helpful for dysautonomia patients.
A couple other highlights of the week
- We did a joint birthday party for a couple of the kids. Usually we don’t do shared parties, but we had to push the youngest kid’s party out by about a month between illness and scheduling conflicts. There was a shared cake, but they each got to blow out candles on one side of the cake. The youngest was excited to get a toy farm and a Spidey and his Amazing Friends toy. The oldest got a lot of awesome things, but she was quite excited for a Lord of the Rings Build-A-Bear we surprised her with named “Frodo Beargins.”
- My kids have been big into Greek Mythology since we started the Percy Jackson series early in the pandemic, and the big kids are now working on a project where they are acting out songs from EPIC: The Musical, which they are then going to go back and use as reference videos to draw and animate the scene. If you don’t know what EPIC is, it’s a original musical being put together online (mostly through TikTok) by Jorge Rivera-Herrans based on The Odyssey. I definitely recommend checking it out.
- I’ve been working on stuff for my Etsy shop. Entirely not Disney related, but anyone who knows me in real life knows that my life revolves around making systems that work for me, and I’ve been designing my own planners, homeschool organization supplies, the kids’ student IDs, chef cards (for my allergies), and business branding materials for a while now. My background is in photography and graphic design, and I figured, I’ve got most of the files already saved on my computer, so I figured why not put them out there? It’s not totally ready to launch, but it’ll be happening soon. I don’t plan on sharing much about the Etsy stuff here, but when I launch it, I’ll post about it in a home blog.
- I finally got the chance to try Allergy-Safe Bagels from The Greater Knead. Bagels have been a favorite breakfast food of mine for as long as I can remember, and when my allergies were starting to get nailed down last year they were one of the things I was super sad about losing. But last month I found these Gluten and Top-9 Free Everything Bagels while shopping at our local Wegmans. I paired it with Violife Just Like Cream Cheese Original spread (warning to my friends with Tree Nut allergies – this cream cheese replacement is made with coconut oil) and it was delicious. The bagels are only available at my local store in a couple varieties, but the company (which also makes safe pretzels and bagel chips) does offer shipping and subscription boxes via their website.
- I heard a rumor about plus sizes above 2X no longer being carried in Old Navy stores. I’m hoping to go investigate this soon. It would be a huge disappointment if this were accurate. It’s hard enough to find mainstream stores making plus-size clothing at all, but when you’re in the higher sizes and size consistency may be an issue, it’s super important to be able to try things on. I know I was thrilled when I found 4X bike shorts there before the Disney trip that fit me really well, and those shorts became an integral part of my wardrobe. I really hope this rumor isn’t true. Fat bodies deserve the same access to comfortable and fashionable clothing as straight-sized bodies.
Here’s what’s coming up soon on the blog:
- We’re coming up on the end of the Trip Report. Hollywood Studios will be this week for sure, and if we get to it, Animal Kingdom (our last park day) may be closer to next weekend. If not this week, Animal Kingdom will be coming soon.
- Restaurant reviews for Crystal Palace for Dinner and Hollywood and Vine for breakfast.
- The post about ECV and Wheelchair rentals was supposed to be finished last week, but I got a little behind. It’s coming, just taking a little longer than planned.
