Home Blog Episode 5

So my plans for the last few days took a hard left on Friday. If you follow the blog on Facebook, you know there was an incident with my middle kid involving a scratched cornea and urgent care. Here’s what happened: around 4:30 pm on Friday, the kids downloaded a video game that they had been waiting months for the release of. The nine-year-old was getting it loaded and was very excited to check it out, but the toddler had other plans. He ended up poking his big brother right in the eye. It was red and watery, but otherwise it looked okay. Originally, we operated under the assumption that his eye was going to be irritated for a little bit, just because of being touched by something that shouldn’t have been there.

However, when 6:30 rolled around and it was hurting more, not less, I made a judgement call and we took him to the local urgent care when my wife got home from work. The doctor there used an eye drop that both numbs the eye and glows neon green and looked at his eye with a magnifier under a blacklight. Lo and behold, there was a large scratch right across the iris and pupil, right in the middle of his eye. They gave him a prescription for antibiotic eye drops, told us to use ibuprofen and acetaminophen to knock down the pain, and follow up with either his pediatrician or his opthalmologist as soon as possible.

I called the opthalmologist’s office first thing Saturday morning. Normally they’re closed on weekends, but their emergency answering service paged the doctor on call and he called me back within ten minutes. He had us bring him in to the office right away, where he put in some more numbing drops and looked at his eye under the light. He said he originally thought patching would be his recommendation, but once he was able to see for himself what the injury looked like and where it was, he recommended putting a contact lens in to cover the part of the eye that was scratched. That would create a barrier between the injured cornea and the eyelid, which would hurt more every time he blinked. We have to go back Monday to get it re-checked and take out the contact lens. The good news is that there shouldn’t be any long-term damage, the bad news is that it’s a pretty miserable injury to have and the pain has been pretty bad.

In other news, here’s a little bit of what to expect on the blog this week:

  • a continuation of the Trip Report posts (our second Magic Kingdom day should be up before next weekend)
  • a review of our dinner at ‘Ohana (a favorite of ours!)
  • a look at ECV and wheelchair rentals at the parks
  • more Gluten-Free and Allergy-Friendly Restaurant information as I continue working on the updated Allergen Matrix project

… and in case you missed it, hop over to Instagram for my post celebrating the 25th Anniversary of Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park yesterday. I shared some fun photos from 2012 including Mickey’s Jammin’ Jungle Parade and Camp Minnie-Mickey! (Camp Minnie-Mickey closed in January 2014 and the parade wrapped up that summer as construction began on Pandora: The World of Avatar, which is now in the area that used to be Camp Minnie-Mickey.)
