Gluten Free and Allergy-Friendly Options at Toledo

The Michelin Guide was recently updated for 2023, and two Walt Disney World restaurants were added to the prestigious list. The first is Toledo, a restaurant focused on Spanish cuisine, located at the top of Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort with view of the fireworks over in EPCOT. The other is Victoria & Albert’s, arguably the most exclusive dining experience on Disney property, located within Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa. They join two other restaurants that were previously included in the Michelin Guide,: California Grill (which just released an updated menu last week) and Citrico’s.

In this post, you can find info on dining at Toledo with special dietary needs, including celiac disease and Top 8 allergens. (A post explaining how Victoria & Albert’s works will be coming shortly, and Citrico’s is on the list for next week.)

Remember the Golden Rules of Disney Allergy Dining:

  • Disney doesn’t include highly-refined oils, including soybean oil on their allergy menus
  • Disney has strong protocols in place to avoid cross-contact, but it’s never 100% guaranteed. There are not separate allergy-friendly kitchens.
  • Allergy Advisory Statements (such as “may contain” or “shared equipment” or “same facility”) are not regulated and are not factored into the allergens in a dish.
  • ALWAYS inform your server of any allergies, speak to an allergy coordinator (at quick service restaurants), speak to the chefs making your food when possible (table service restaurants are great with this), and check the allergy binders where available for your allergens.

If you’re just here for the allergen matrix, you can scroll to the bottom and skip the rest! I make every effort to keep this up-to-date, but always verify the safety of what you’re hoping to eat with the chef or allergy coordinator.

A quick note: the Toledo menu doesn’t seem to be updated yet for sesame allergies, which is why I haven’t included it in the allergen matrix. I’ll continue to monitor for updates and will share what I find as information becomes available.

My Thoughts

Firstly, I’m frustrated about sesame not being mentioned at all except in one item in “Tapas and Starters”. I’m sure there are probably other items without sesame, and (as I said before) I’ll be monitoring the Disney site for updates to the menus.

Other than that, this menu seems pretty “average” in terms of the number of options for guests with multiple allergies. There’s at least one thing a guest with my allergies (all top 8, minus coconut, goat cheese, soy lecithin and highly refined soybean oil) can have on most sections of the menu.

Guests with a peanut allergy should do fine here. It doesn’t look like peanuts are on the menu at all. Tree nuts are also pretty limited on the menu here, as well as soy (but again, they do not include highly-refined soybean oil on their allergy menus, so if you can’t do the oil, you may be more limited).

There are no specific plant-based/vegan options listed, but there may be options available. My best guesses there would be the Pan con Tomate and “Aceitunas” Marinated Olives in the Tapas and Starters, the Brick Oven Cauliflower entree, several of the sides (Brussels sprouts, blistered shishito peppers, roasted tomato bomba rice, braised gigante beans), and the Chocolate-Avocado Mousse dessert. All of the kids’ entrees are animal-based.

The biggest obstacles I can see is that guests who are free from gluten/wheat are super limited on options from the Tapas and Starters menu, unless they are able to make some of these items with allergy-friendly breads and rolls. (It’s entirely possible, but I can’t guarantee that’s an option.)
