Gluten-Free and Allergy-Friendly Eats at California Grill at Disney’s Contemporary Resort

For the past eighteen months, offerings at the signature dining restaurant at the top of Disney’s Contemporary Resort have been limited to a special menu created for the Walt Disney World 50th Anniversary celebration. Yesterday was the final day of that menu, and today California Grill will be debuting a new prix fixe menu with some old favorites and new options.

If you have celiac disease or food allergies, here’s what you can expect to find on the menu.

Remember the Golden Rules of Disney Allergy Dining:

  • Disney doesn’t include highly-refined oils, including soybean oil on their allergy menus
  • Disney has strong protocols in place to avoid cross-contact, but it’s never 100% guaranteed. There are not separate allergy-friendly kitchens.
  • Allergy Advisory Statements (such as “may contain” or “shared equipment” or “same facility”) are not regulated and are not factored into the allergens in a dish.
  • ALWAYS inform your server of any allergies, speak to an allergy coordinator (at quick service restaurants), speak to the chefs making your food when possible (table service restaurants are great with this), and check the allergy binders where available for your allergens.

My Thoughts

I’m having a hard time believing this menu is completely accurate, particularly the kids’ section. Something about sesame being listed in all the kids’ sides and even the fresh fruit dessert has me a little suspicious. The menu here is also a lot more restrictive for guests with multiple allergies.

Guests with allergies to peanuts, tree nuts, fish, and shellfish seem to have the most options here, while guests who are free-from sesame, gluten, milk, and soy are much more limited. The only options for entrees that would be safe for me as they come are on the kids’ menu.

Vegan guests have options for the Market Inspirations and Chef’s Journey courses (Strawberry and Raspberry Salad and Saffron Risotto, respectively) and could likely get fresh fruit as a dessert option.

Even with the limited options for both my wife and I, we’ll still end up revisiting this restaurant. It’s got a truly special place in my heart as we’ve shared our anniversary dinner here before watching “Happily Ever After” from the rooftop fireworks viewing area. I also have a hard time believing that the chefs at this caliber of restaurant can’t work around multiple allergies by modifying items as needed. I am wondering if they’ll be bringing back the brunch that used to be available as well. Stay tuned for updates.
