Planning a trip to the Disney Parks can seem overwhelming for anyone. For those of us who have experienced the “walk of shame” at other amusement parks, squeezed into too-tight seats at a concert venue, or have had to call ahead to a restaurant to make sure they have wide enough seating, it can be downright daunting. Throw in mobility issues, medical conditions, food allergies, and toddlers, and you’ve got a recipe for massive anxiety. How on Earth are you going to enjoy this trip?
That’s why I decided to created Access the Mouse. I’ve been there, and let me tell you… Walt Disney World is AMAZING for guests of all shapes, sizes, and abilities. I’ve done Disney over and over as a self-identified fat person for ten years now. (By the way, this is a fat-positive space. More on that later.) I am also disabled. I’ve got a disabled wife. We’ve done Disney with babies to elementary schoolers. We’ve done Disney with celiac disease. We’ve done Disney with sensory processing issues, food allergies, mobility problems, and more. We’ve flown down and relied on Disney transportation, and we’ve road-tripped down and drove ourselves to the parks. We’ve been to several special events and festivals over the years… and we can’t wait to go back again.
My only goal in sharing our experiences with the world is to help you put your minds at ease and plan for the most magical vacation of your life. We’re starting with a basic rundown of access to Walt Disney World for guests in bigger bodies, and will expand to include info about disability access, food allergies, tips for sensory issues and more. General Disney Parks news will also be featured from time to time. A resource page is also in the works, and will include links to other books or places on the web that feature info or products that you may find helpful. Like the parks, the info on this site will never be complete – things are constantly changing and I want to make sure we keep things up to date as well.
My expertise focuses in particular on Walt Disney World in Orlando, but I would LOVE to hear from guests about their own experiences with any and all Disney Destinations. This is a space I hope will evolve into a major free resource for anyone with concerns about accessing everything Disney has to offer.
Note: Please understand that not all experiences are currently available due to the effects of COVID-19. Things are still evolving and hopefully will begin to slowly return to normal soon. Due to my families’ specific medical issues, high-risk status, and the ages of our kids (who are too young to be vaccinated) we have not been able to head to the parks during the COVID-19 pandemic. We are tentatively planning to go back in 2022, so long as it is safe for us to do so.
